what This project comes from
Established the 16th of december 2020
This is a school project made by Emelie Aktanius Franzon at Umeå school of Architecture. My aim for this project has been to empower those who despite being limited by so much still manage to extend themselves to care for also others in their surrounding. This particular website is a gift, and a part of a project that will have its end in June 2021.
I hope this website can deliver the small moments of happiness and hope that I have been aiming for.
Course description of STUDIO 10
Making the Difference.
Architecture for displaced populations in Greece and Turkey.
The refugee crisis is one of the biggest challenges facing global society and with the effects of climate change it will grow in scale and importance.
Studio 10 offers you the chance to engage with the refugee crisis through working directly with NGOs, Volunteers, refugees and host communities. The studio focusses on live projects in the Eastern Mediterranean frontier with the EU and we will be proposing community, educational and housing projects in Lesvos, Greece and in Izmir, Turkey.
The emphasis will be on architectural proposals that meet the practical needs of refugees and migrants and support their cultural identity and personal dignity. We will also investigate our personal and collective duties and responsibilities as architects and will not be shy to talk about beauty, poetics and emotions.
Teachers: Amalia Katopodis, Sangram Shirke and Robert Mull
” The emphasis will be on architectural proposals that meet the practical needs of refugees and migrants and support their cultural identity and personal dignity. So far you have made detailed proposals for TIAFI and you have defined and communicated your overall ambitions and methodology for the year in your contract.
Now it is time to start work on your main project for the year.
This is a continuous process lasting until May but within the project there are a number of moments where
you test and communicate your project to others as it emerges.
The first of these is [the] FREE GIFT which coincides with a season of celebration and generosity whatever your religion or background.
[the] FREE GIFT
The gift project has two parts:
a. What you are proposing, designing or developing. b. How you give it.
For instance you might design a new house for one of your refugee friends but gift it to them in the form of an interactive model, a film, an event or a planning application.
Like [the] contract the gift must be autonomous
and capable of being understood, appreciated and if appropriate used by those who receive it without any additional instructions or information.
The gift must be given to one or all of your friends in such a way that you receive feedback, which informs the main project.
I have a vision for this website to become a bigger platform. I imagine the website to be connected to all the possible organizations that works with people in need around our globe.
